INSURRECTION IN AMERICA

The television coverage brought tears to eyes and a strange emptiness to my core. My five year old granddaughter wondered into the room, sensed I was upset, looked at the television and asked "Are those real people Poppy?"

Joe Biden demonstrated Presidential leadership and character. He vented and shared the horror most US citizens feel. He affirmed the scenes on TV is not the real America.  That is a moral victory of the day.
Our collective history struck a new low. There is this to take away from the insurrectionist attack on the US Capitol-thousands of faces were captured on security cameras, by the media and on phones. Prosecutions will follow. Members of the House and Senate are resolved to finish the process of the republic to assure the dark night of the last four years will end.

World leaders have stated their shock. I use this space to tell my friends abroad, we are sickened, but we are resolved as well.
Five years ago I warned that Donald Trump was evil. I have said he is at least a Russian stooge. We are damaged because of him, but he is not alone in the attempt to undermine our republic.
Senators Hawley and Cruz are seditionists. They should be tossed out of the senate and face charges. They were instigators of the violence we witnessed. Both of them, deplorable men to begin with, undertook their roles in the insurrection simply for their own political gain, trying to lay claim to some of the Trump loyal. There were others who gave shelter to the enemy with their support; Johnson, Loeffler, Lankford, Perdue Daines, Kennedy, Blackburn, Braun, Lummis, Marshall, Hagerty, and Tuberville. They should at the least be censured and stripped of rank. I would prefer to seem them tossed from the Senate.
The fools in the House should be simply tossed out prosecuted.
What they all did was unAmerican, and encouraged the domestic terrorism we witnessed.
The Republican Party that condoned and encouraged the Trump outrages of the last 4 years will stand in shame. History will note they encouraged the lunacy that has grown under Trump.
Trump is a traitor. He is unfit to continue in office, even in these late hours. Congressional leadership, the Chief Justice and Vice President Pence should move to preempt any more Trump madness. There are ways to move him out power and they should be executed

That we can say those MAGA hatted, Trump flag waving rioters and insurrectionists acted in an illegal, and crazy manner does not undo the fact they BELIEVE the lies. They think, no, they know in their heart, that Donald Trump won the election.
This is the greatest poison that Trump pumped into the republic. The lies, the attack on media credibility, the dog whistles, the nod and wink to racists, the endorsement of the absolute lunacy of the Q conspiracies and his attempt to overturn the eletion were part of this evil man's game plan.
The brain washed need action. First law enforcement and security need to find, arrest and prosecute those involved in the Capitol breech and it's planning and/or any further insurrectionist activity. They should be pursued with the full force of the law. They are domestic terrorists, even if they are brainwashed. Their actions are a threat.
Harder to handle will be how to deal with friends, family members and those among us who believe the lies. That will take lots of attention, careful execution, prayers, love, and finding a civil way to simply no longer suffer fools easily.
It will take a massive public education effort.

When my granddaughter looked at the TV, I explained quickly the people were behaving badly because they had been lied to, did not use their brains, had no respect for other people and were violating the law. Hard concepts for a 5 year old. I told her that the very bad man Trump was responsible for it, but there were more good people in America than there are like those on TV. It was then time for a walk with Nana who was also shaken by the horror of this day.

Stay strong. There is a democratic republic to support and rebuild. There is lunacy to expunge. There is honor, dignity and civility to lift up. We have to walk the talk.

    See you down the trail.

You Need to Pay Attention

the redhot poker or torch lily in our back garden

Winter's face on the California central coast is a far cry from the snow, ice, sheets of lead gray skies and cold rain of my native Indiana.
Here nature adorns itself with festive color and blooms and cattle birth new calves. A few blogger friends have posted scenes of snow recently and while I enjoy the pictures, I'm pleased to no longer shovel, scrap or drive in it. I've become a weather wimp.
As much as I've tried to ignore it, the color of this poker stirs a thought about the president-elect.
Mr Trump you've got to pay attention and start attending or reading the daily intelligence briefings that are available to you. You are dealing with higher stakes than a real estate project. This is not reality television, it is the real world. It is a far cry more complicated, complex, historical and dangerous than anything you've ever wrapped your mind around. If you can Tweet all night about Alec Baldwin, you can listen to your director of national intelligence. You might learn something. Actually you need to learn, a lot. Grow up!

did the russians elect our president?
While it sounds like the yarn of a le Carre', Ludlum, Clancy, Silva, Knebel or some other espionage writer there is now serious question about how the Russians may have engineered Trump's election. The CIA has briefed Congress. The administration now ponders how to respond to this historic violation of our democratic republic.  Maybe that's a reason the trumpster has taken only 3 intel briefings in over a month. You've got to pay attention. We all do. So should the electors on the electoral college. This is unexplored territory.

a real hero
NASA Photo 1962

We lost a true American leader and hero with the passing of 95 year old John Glenn. The photo was taken aboard the recovery ship after Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth.
On February 20, 1962 Owen Fisher, biology teacher and football and track coach turned on a radio in our science lab classroom and said, "today we are going to listen to history." Glenn's flight in Friendship 7 was not a sure thing. The success made us proud.
He was already a decorated hero, a marine pilot who flew missions in World War II and Korea. A democrat he was elected to the US Senate in 1974 and served until 1999. In 98 he became the oldest American to fly in space when he returned aboard the shuttle Discovery.
The President elect called him a "great American hero."
It is hard to imagine two men more different in skill, courage, temperament, service and character.

    See you down the trail.

GOLDEN OLDIES & OTHER SENTIMENTS

a throwback
Old images come back to haunt. This was a billboard in the 1970's when Gold Cards were the big thing. Cris Conner and I hosted a morning show on WNAP. Cris, the "Salvador Dali" of radio jocks and yours truly, the sedate investigative journalist, made an odd couple though enormously compatible. Halcyon, salad days they were.
Cris was and is a supremely talented photographer. He also handcrafted a walking stick that has gotten miles of California trail time.

when a plan comes together
     June Lake in the Sierras
Karen, a friend and former colleague and her husband Larry have just completed a move from Indianapolis to California, something I am familiar with. Karen reminds me that 5 years ago when she decided on the move I told her how quickly the 5 years would go. Joy of joy, they have located in the Republic and have been reborn as Californians.
Karen and her eldest are planning a trip up to the Sierra and was asking for info. It gave me a chance to evangelize my absolute love of the eastern slope and that area from June Lake to Yosemite. It is our favorite place to hike.

the continuing saga of
an electoral college drop out
Those of us who have been around the block a few times and especially those of us who were paid to cover politics  are seeing something without precedent, political pros who boldly question the competence and intelligence of a candidate who could be given the nuclear codes. Nor have I seen national security experts en masse warn the nation about the danger of electing said candidate. One former director of the CIA gave up a compensated post at a network and membership on boards of directors, also at personal financial loss to warn us about the danger of Donald Trump.
It is my view Trump lacks the character, skill, experience and emotional balance required of the job. He is irrationally irresponsible. His remark of  the "second Amendment people" stopping Hillary Clinton is "morally criminal" at least.
He and his apologists can try to explain this away as a joke or an off the cuff comment that is now being overplayed, but that is bullshit. He knows everything a presidential candidate says will be scrutinized or he is stupid. The comment is either another nail in his coffin of incompetence or he is advocating violence. Either disqualifies him. I wish there was a prosecutor out there with the stones to file a charge of some sort to punctuate the gravity of such mindless trash talk.
You don't have to like Hillary Clinton to realize Donald Trump and his campaign should be flushed.

     See you down the trail.
