    Old images come back to haunt. This was a billboard in the 1970's when Gold Cards were the big thing. Cris Conner and I hosted a morning show on WNAP. Cris, the "Salvador Dali" of radio jocks and yours truly, the sedate investigative journalist, made an odd couple though enormously compatible. Halcyon, salad days they were. 
    Cris was and is a supremely talented photographer. He also handcrafted a walking stick that has gotten miles of California trail time.

    Karen, a friend and former colleague and her husband Larry have just completed a move from Indianapolis to California, something I am familiar with. Karen reminds me that 5 years ago when she decided on the move I told her how quickly the 5 years would go. Joy of joy, they have located in the Republic and have been reborn as Californians.

   Karen and her eldest are planning a trip up to the Sierra and was asking for info. It gave me a chance to evangelize my absolute love of the eastern slope and that area from June Lake to Yosemite. It is our favorite place to hike.

an electoral college drop out

    Those of us who have been around the block a few times and especially those of us who were paid to cover politics  are seeing something without precedent, political pros who boldly question the competence and intelligence of a candidate who could be given the nuclear codes. Nor have I seen national security experts en masse warn the nation about the danger of electing said candidate. One former director of the CIA gave up a compensated post at a network and membership on boards of directors, also at personal financial loss to warn us about the danger of Donald Trump. 

     It is my view Trump lacks the character, skill, experience and emotional balance required of the job. He is irrationally irresponsible. His remark of  the "second Amendment people" stopping Hillary Clinton is "morally criminal" at least. 

     He and his apologists can try to explain this away as a joke or an off the cuff comment that is now being overplayed, but that is bullshit. He knows everything a presidential candidate says will be scrutinized or he is stupid. The comment is either another nail in his coffin of incompetence or he is advocating violence. Either disqualifies him. I wish there was a prosecutor out there with the stones to file a charge of some sort to punctuate the gravity of such mindless trash talk.

     You don't have to like Hillary Clinton to realize Donald Trump and his campaign should be flushed.

THE TREE & THE FACTS

    Our good neighbor Karen asked what is that fluffy white snowball like tree blooming near our deck.

    I said it was a bit of a mystery, even to the expert arborist who keeps it healthy and trimmed. He thought it was a kind of Bottle Brush tree. Others told us it was called Paper Bark or that it was a kind of pepper.

   Our almost 19 inches of rain this year-the most in 5 years-agreed with it and it's been a magnificent bloom.

   Karen, who sees this exposure researched and learned it is a Melaleuca Linarifolia, also called Paper Bark and Bottle Brush.

   Full from the road, it is a center piece in a meditation spot Lana created just off our front deck.

   A closer look shows you why it's called Paper Bark.

    And the soft blooms look a bit like a bottle brush.

  Not sure how good it is for allergy sufferers, but it is beautiful.

GETTING AN ANSWER

    Hillary Clinton wasted no time in assembling the words of Jeb, Ted, Lindsey, Carly, John and others as they spoke of the Donald. It makes an effective commercial. We'll see a lot of that kind of thing.

     Perhaps I'm hoping for too much, but I'd like to see the 2016 political media begin to act like adults. They could begin by emulating the pros of yesteryear who asked questions  until they got an answer-to the question they posed. They did not accept a rehearsed and canned political spiel. Refusing to answer directly and prevaricating has become business as normal. Getting a straight answer is especially necessary in the case of Trump. That is not to say they should not also press Clinton, but she has a record, defined positions, actions and a voting record. Trump is only pie in the sky promises, double talk (he repeats himself endlessly) and braggadocio. 

      Americans will vote for whomever they choose, but when it is the Presidency at issue it is wise to extract as full a measure of the candidate's thoughts, mental facility and understanding of issues as can be extracted. Trump has been given a pass, thus far. He's also a skilled deflector. It's time for the high priced media talent to begin showing the mettle to demand substantive answers from Drumpf.

     Unseemly as it is more than a few Republicans will begin to close ranks around their nominee. They did it with Barry Goldwater last century. There will be even reluctant endorsers, that is what political parties do. Though none will provide the humor of Governor Christie. He's come to resemble a neglected orphan in a  Charles Dicken's setting, transformed into a kind of adoring lap puppy licking up whatever it is his master spews his way. And Donald spews.

      He'll get new staff, position analysts and policy guides and he will suddenly have people feeding his brain. But we all know it is just a cram. Until Hillary stands on stage with him at a debate, and don't you imagine she can be tough, we can hope the media will begin to see what's beneath that orange top.

Mandela as an example

    The world's knowledge of Nelson Mandela has grown exponentially thanks to media saturation this last week.

    The comparison to George Washington as father of his nation is apt. Both men were requisite for their moment in history and by all accounts both rose above their own pain, suffering and challenge to evince a defining national character.  

    Churchill's legacy, rallying a battle scarred Britain to stand in the breach of WWII is another contemporary example-the correct person at a pivotal moment. Copernicus, Einstein, Newton and Da Vinci are among others who perceived and thought reality and boundary busting norms and who pushed history.

     Is there something behind such motions of time and history?  Fate? Serendipity? Providence? What do you think?

    Though my skill is sub zero on any scale, I've always been fascinated with artist studios. And I've been lucky to live with an extraordinarily talented woman who has created fascinating spaces from which to create.

   I've noted too, that artists generally stimulate greater output when they are in each other's company.  Here's a snap shot of such.  Karen from Marin County, Jane from North Carolina and Lana from Cambria in a moment that could best be described as an engine running flat out.

creative endeavours
break throughs in knowledge
like the advent of light in darkness.
Nothing is as it was before 
that moment or that person.

And we have the good fortune to live with the difference.
