Celebration

Paella and Pinot Fest
Just ahead, we'll visit a civilized retreat from the world, the 15th Pinot and Paella Fest at the park in Templeton Ca.

from the jungle
A knock on the gate interrupted my preparation of tea as I listened to a report on yesterday's vote.
A young man, wearing a name badge with something in his hand stood in the sun at the end of the walk.
"Can I help you" I said cranking a kitchen window open.
"Yes, my name is Rob, I'm running for election," he smiled holding up a flyer. "Am I too late?"
"Looks like you are starting early," I said.

Actually Rob was a realtor, prospecting. But they do start campaigning early in California.
Yesterday was what we call a jungle primary. In this jungle the top two vote getters in every elected position moves on to the November general election.
The jungle is open, not a party preference vote. One can vote for independents, greens, democrats, republicans, libertarians and a few other iterations.
So our election to replace the mostly respected to beloved Jerry Brown features Gavin Newsom, Brown's lt. governor and a Trump Republican Donald Cox, a businessman.  LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was sidelined with the rest of a big field.
Newsom is liberal, Cox is conservative and the Trump government has been and will likely be one of the issues here.
I suggest, this is why life also offers sweet refuge.

diversions
Songwriter/singer Jill Knight is a tonic. Playing with extraordinarily talented musicians her lyrics take you to many places and moods.

and then there is the fest
Fifteen years ago Marc Goldberg and Maggie D'Ambrosia of Windward Vineyard put Pinot and Paella together as a celebration of Paso Robles wine makers and chefs to the benefit of the Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation.
There is a clear benefit to patrons as Paso wineries pour and chefs compete in a paella cook off.

THE FALL- THE SNEAKY THREAT-THE NEW PARTY SPOT

      North of Cambria, early July
The president's foreign trip underscores a universal acknowledgment, the leader of the US is no longer the most powerful nor is he the "leader of the free world" as we used to say.
International leaders are joined in chorus by analysts and writers from the right and left-America's role has been diminished by Trump. They agree Vladimir Putin has more moxie, finesse and muscle than the American president. Other leaders are assuming the moral and ethical leadership role, previously played by the American President.
If Trump has a cogent policy, it has not been articulated. What the world hears is "America first," warnings about enemies, the freakish, petulant, embarrassing behavior and a serious lack of grasp. At least he can read a teleprompter.
We take a deeper dive, later.

not speaking?
I can't help but chuckle at this. The body language and pose is hilarious.
In fact Lana and our pal Grif are looking for other friends, but the symmetry of the snap is amusing.
A delightful reality that struck us some 10 years ago on our migration to Cambria is it's similarity to a big Arts School.
Cambria loves music. It's an art colony and home to musicians, writers, guild and craft artists from Hollywood and television, bohemians of several generations, free thinkers and free spirits. Of course there are others too, master gardeners, dog lovers, cat lovers, nature lovers, hikers, surfers and people of every conceivable political stripe and attitude. We have our one percenters too, but not nearly in the concentration you find further north, or south. There is a large cross ideological percentage who love music and hanging out.
We've watched this joyful past-time and we followed its change of venues. The Painted Sky recording story in its evolving locales. The departed Wise Owl was a guaranteed good evening. Now popular singer/songwriter Jill Knight has organized for a new venue-Centrally Grown, formerly the Hamlet.
In the scene above Jill is joined by the accomplished Eric Williams and Billy Foppiano.
She will perform and so will others from the deep bench of Central California talent. The constant party has a new location and we boomers remain in our suspended state of a big high school crowd waiting for the next party.
A wood fired pizza, glass of wine or beer, great music, friends and a lovely California evening has to be high on the list of "as good as it gets."

and there is much to recover from
I've been reading the conversation among Republican, Libertarian and Conservative friends who have tolerated my pragmatism and political agnosticism for years. They are not trump supporters. They certainly are not liberals, Democrats, or anything other than what we consider traditional moderate to right center Republicans.
I agree with their notion the trump vote commission is wrong. It is federal overreach, dangerous, sinister and anti American.
It is a nefarious attempt to gather and collect data the Federal government has no need of, nor right to expect. To turn it over would pose the risk of likely abuse and manipulation by the trumpist/extreme right wing cabal or others. There could be no guarantee the data would be safe, anywhere. We can't forget this administration had to be shoved into acknowledging the Russian cyber attack on America.
(Getting to the bottom of that attack and determining if there was participation on the part of US citizens is a national priority.)
The states that have flashed the bird at the trump election commission requests are to be applauded.
Another nagging thought. Mike Pence is quietly working to build his donor base. While his boss is watching a big screen television and tweeting, the VP has been hustling money and preparing for a post trump world. This very guy whose Indiana Republican party was ready to depose because of his nefarious right wing schemes and embarrassments to the state, would have access to, if not control of, the private voter data the trump commission has been asking for. That should also give you the willies.

SPEAKING PICTURES

PEACE IN THE VALLEY
Along Santa Rosa Creek Road outside Cambria Ca.
GENTLE INTO THE DAY
Birthing season has come to the ridge. Lana alerted me to a very recent arrival, just across the road.
Mom was protective of her pride, just hours old.
A PROACTIVE BLADE
An old pine is topped to prevent tumbling into service lines or onto the road.

OF OBAMA, CRUZ, SPOOKS AND FALL NOSTALGIOU-FUN TIME-THE WEEKENDER

WANTING TO KICK THEM AROUND
While in the Washington DC area this week I took special interest in the fallen leaves, pleased by our liberation from raking and bagging.
I confess now I hated to rake leaves.  As a kid I'd complain to mom and dad about the pointlessness of it.  "Just let them rot and fertilize the grass" I'd plea, unsuccessfully.
Leaf raking and bagging is not an activity in our California lifestyle-fortunately.  So while these shots may be old hat to some of you, it is a sweet reminder to others of the positive of an absence.
LINGERING MUMBLES
Overheard laments and lash outs from the Halloween party circuit.
"I'm so over Obama" a liberal friend complained. "I almost came in black face but I still know what's wrong!"
"I'm the affordable care web site" said a tilted box, strung with blinking lights and wires.
"I came as Ted Cruz" said a friend in street clothes. "So now I'm going to be an ass hole all night!"
Singer Jill Knight won my award.  Dressed as Captain Morgan complete with long curly tresses, mustache and appropriate attire, I couldn't believe it was Jill, even when she spoke right in my face.  But then proprietor Lyn Nanni was unrecognizable as well in her Mistress of Darkness attire and face paint. I'm slow on the uptake I guess.
THE OBAMA APOLOGIES
If anything, the Snowden document leak has given the State Department and or White House protocol officers plenty to do.  With revelation after revelation about who the NSA has bugged or tapped or snooped on, it seems the President has been as busy with world leaders apologizing and parsing words as anything else, other than maybe kicking some tail to get the web site working.
As a satirist said, everyone had to know we were doing it, we just didn't want talk about it.  And that is crux the matter isn't it?
INDULGENCES
For Weekender foodies-a few snaps grabbed during our own journeys into delicious adventure while back east.
Our dear friends Frank and Sandy have long raved about LAuberge Chez Francoise up in Virginia Horse Country at Great Falls.  It's been repeatedly rated the best and most romantic French Restaurant in the Washington D.C. area.

Our magnificent 3-hour lunch was dream like.  Frank says when he was there once with his late father, a newspaper editor, he was told back in the old days it was a place where CIA executives used their expense accounts. At least it was money well spent.
AND THE HITS KEEP ON COMING
A delight of the nation's capitol is the diversity of great dinning options.  Neighbors pointed the 4 of us to a nearby Asian Fusion spot.  The special rolls were edible art and the Pad Thai was the best I've tasted.  Sorry all I can offer here on the net are pictures.  They can't give the credit the place deserves.

And then there was this crazy Asian take on baked Alaska
Kenji Fusion is the name.  If you are in the DC area, around Falls Church Va., it should be on your list.
AND FINALLY
A VIDEO TREAT
In the spirit of the international diversity of the Washington DC area, here is something my old friend Bruce, aka The Catalyst, found.  This is amusing and a bit amazing
for a number of reasons.  Enjoy
See you down the trail.

THE WEEKENDER-SWEET

SWEET SOUNDS
THE WEEKENDER offers a few minutes of audio and visual pleasure this week.
Offering #1 features a lot of people we know in settings that are within just a few minutes of our ridge top here in Cambria.
BTW,the Central Coast Bioneers are worthy of a few minutes of your search time.

Offering # 2 comes by way of a forward from Bruce A.K.A. The Catalyst. An instrument in your future perhaps?
On this video I suggest you kick it up to the HD version if you can.

AN EVENING IN HARMONY

A SUNSET KNIGHT
Harmony Cellars perches atop a gentle hill over looking Harmony, just a few miles down the Pacific Coast Highway from Cambria.
On this evening one of our favorite singer songwriters
was singing in the sundown.
Jill has a lot of friends and fans.  The setting was
perfect for an impromptu cocktail picnic.
Rocky Butte and Black Mountain sit off on the horizon
with Harmony Cellars Zinfandel closer at hand.
Jill's beautiful vocal stylings painted the mood.
The Harmony hill top added its romance
 A piece of rainbow appeared
and the setting sun added that golden light

A sunset concert leads to a mellow
California night.
See you down the trail.
