escaping and gobsmacked

A Miles Davis set blended nicely into a Horace Silver quintet piece as the Pacific coast glided along through the windshield. Southbound on Highway One, watching the cobalt blue sky and turquoise Pacific wash away dystopian blues.

Nature was giving me a brain massage, kneading away the freak show that is Washington. Art Blakey, and then Ella and Lee Morgan bringing life back to a moribund sense of hope. Being spiked up with the sheer beauty of the California coast, as far away from the evil spell as I can be.  Destination-a better mind set and Morro Bay.
When we visited as tourists, California was always a mind cleanser. We'd come from back east wired up with the ways of politics and intrigues and work. A few breaths of air, the heat of the sun and the Cali culture made all of that seem so silly, other worldly, curious and far away.
Feeling Highway 1 under the wheels, and in the groove the liberation spirit was rising and I had a mission.
Oysters, from Giovanni's on the embarcadero was my assignment for a daughter's birthday party tomorrow. We've been buying oysters and fish from this waterfront since our first adventure in never never land in the late 60's. I love the product of the local fishermen, the staff, and to people watch. I was a  tourist here once and I catch a nostalgic vibe each time I see folks enjoying a vacation and cuing up in line for the take away or being dazzled by the counter case offerings.
Today, there was some other blue magic. Black and red magic too.

     The Woodies are in town.

Woodies at a California Surf Shop! That's about as far from the Senate and this White House that you can get, right?

I heard a woman say to her mate, "You know you're getting old when you remember the Woodies." His retort, "Or when you don't get 'em very often." They snickered and so did a few others milling about.

So maybe the Saturday Night Live skits "The Californians" make you smile. We laugh too. But right now California life makes a lot more sense than Washington stupidity and seems a lot healthier as well.
Here's a man that get's my vote-a man with a real skill and who has them waiting in line

Cruising back up the 1, with Coltrane, Indy's own Wes Montgomery, Marsalis, Parker and Dizzy I felt better and got it through my head that all things change and pass. Whether you call it karma, universal balance, divine justice, or whatever, action gets responded to with reaction and so it has ever been.
I also know I'd rather spend a day on the California coast than in a Senate hearing room. You know, I knew that years ago, but needed simply to get out there and breath it, feel it, enjoy it. I'm not going out on a limb here when I say you can breath it, feel it, and enjoy it wherever you are. It's life and we only have one. We should not let fools, idiots, liars and ideologues take that from us. There are days for fighting, and there are days for recharging. Peace.

    See you down the trail.

THE SYRIAN SOLUTION AND THE HALL

HANDLING THE SYRIAN MATTER
There is a time tested way to respond to Syria's unforgivable and barbaric use of sarin gas that avoids the pitfalls and absurdity of American political theater.
Assad, his high command and his field officers who planned, approved, executed and evaluated the use of the gas should be indicted and charged as international war criminals. This would signify to the world  they acted outside the bounds of the civilized world and international law.
There is an International Criminal Court and there is certainly a history of pursuing, trying and convicting war criminals.  The Nuremberg Trial and the successful prosecution of Nazis at the end of World War II is the most notable but there have been similar prosecutions since.
It would require time to arrest and try those responsible but in the interim they will be known and vilified and will live with both ignominy and the lurking fear of when the hand of justice will reach them.  In that sense they will be pariahs in the civilized world and marked with their alleged crimes, not forgotten and pursued until prosecuted.
Nations do not commit war crimes, people do. A lesson of  the Nuremberg prosecutions is that ultimately individuals are held accountable for their actions, even if they are ordered to do so under a military command. This places the responsibility squarely where it belongs, the conscience and judgement of individual human beings.
To pursue Assad and his minions through a court of law allows the world to revile them and expresses contempt while bringing justice. And importantly it frees the US, or any nation, the need to unilaterally engage in questionable, risky and even philosophically controversial actions.
Two quick points here; the US likes the sovereignty of being able to act unilaterally, though we do not favor such an option to any other nation. Maybe you can understand that bias, but it is a flawed philosophical/moral concept. The other point-you cannot engage in a limited action, bombing or other wise, without changing the dynamic of the conflict. Any tinkering in the complexity of a civil war threatens to draw us in more deeply. Look at history, it shouts loudly about this.
Furthermore I do not trust the wisdom of this President nor his advisers, nor do I have faith in the judgement and requisite reasoning of our current legislative branch of government. The senior chamber possesses a modicum of wisdom. The House however might be the assemblage of the least qualified, least intelligent and most dysfunctional buffoons, idiots, grafters, poltroons and clowns in the history of Congress!
Finally following this course of action is the use of diplomacy and reason above the use of lethal force and power. That should always be our first and best option.

REPUBLICANS SHOULD HEAR THIS & THE KING IS HERE

AN EXTRAORDINARY FAREWELL
Words, important for all Americans to hear, have been inscribed now into the historic record of the US Senate, but first they should be heeded. What Senator Richard Lugar said in his farewell to the Senate is counsel and wisdom to this generation and to the future.
Lugar is the most senior Republican in the senate and has served there 30 years.  He is widely considered to be one of the most intelligent Senators in history.
Link here to see Lugar's farewell on the Senate floor.
Lugar's 15 minute farewell could well save this nation years of acrimony and heartbreak.
     He cautioned his own party.
"...Republicans must be willing to suspend reflexive opposition that serves no purpose but to limit their own role in strategic questions and render cooperation impossible."
Lugar is one of the nation's leading thinkers on foreign policy. He chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and has advised Presidents.
"All parties should recognize the need for unity in the coming year when events in Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, North Korea and other locations may test American national security in extreme ways."
Americans are fortunate Lugar will continue to work on nuclear non proliferation and the cooperative threat reduction program that he and former Senator Sam Nunn started after the fall of the Soviet Union. They deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.  Their work to stabilize and control nuclear and chemical/biological weapons is one of the great chapters in world history.
I wrote earlier about Lugar's impact and my history of covering him. You can link to that post here.
If you have any interest in the state of American politics, I urge you to see the C-SPAN file on his farewell.
THE KING TIDE
It's called the King Tide and indeed it is.

It is the rare cosmological and natural phenomena where the tide is so high, the beach disappears.

Here are a few frames of the same beach, before the King Tide.

See the difference in boulder before and after-

       See you down the trail.

WHO WOULD SAY THAT TODAY?

A POLITICIAN WHO SPOKE A TRUTH
He is probably unknown by the majority of voters today, but he said it like it was.  Alben W. Barkley was Vice President of the United States under President Harry Truman.
Born in a log cabin, yes he was, in Kentucky he was named Willie Alben but later changed his named to Alben William.
He served in Congress and in the Senate, where he was
was majority leader from 37 to 47.
He coined the phrase "give 'em hell, Harry" as Truman was
about to begin his famous "whistle stop" campaign by taking
a train across the country and speaking from a platform
at the rear of the train.
Barkley ushered a new age of presidential campaigning when he initiated a series of "prop stop" appearances-flying
to several locations in a day.  It is hard to imagine
a campaign that doesn't involve air travel.
Barkley was a great campaigner, being called
an "iron man" for giving as many as 16 speeches a day.
So in that context here's something he said
that we'd never hear one of the modern politicians say
"THE BEST AUDIENCE IS INTELLIGENT, WELL
EDUCATED AND A LITTLE DRUNK."
Wouldn't it be fun to hear a candidate
with that kind of spunk and humor.
It seems the modern strain of politicus candidatus
is a bit anemic by comparison.
