McCONAUGHEY AGNOISTES and WHAT EMERGES FROM THE SEA

MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY
IN CONFLICT

Two current works have put Matthew McConaughey on the screen as an actor who has mastered the role of an agonist.
Most of the current buzz and accolades are for his remarkable role in Dallas Buyers Club. That role personifies this idea of a man in conflict-a hard partying rodeo cowboy/electrician homophobe who becomes an advocate- combatant in the early HIV/Aids crisis.
True Detective writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto has given McConaughey the role of Rust Chole, a vehicle where the actor has taken complexity and a cosmic level of brooding to a new level of brilliance in a haunting performance that achieves mastery
Pizzolatto's story line has McConaughey and partner Woody Harrelson as Martin Hart, move backwards and forwards in time as they encounter a bizarre and grizzly crime. The evolution and spin in the character Rust Chole, the nuance, ticks, tautness and unique personality is absolutely stunning to see. The ownership and  demonstration of the character is powerful enough that his behavior in the internal affairs interview process will establish a level of interpretation like that of Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle.
Truce Detective is an acquired taste and its field of play is more gritty than some will appreciate.  As a young reporter I spent a few years on the street, during which time I covered the police beat and became friends particularly with a couple of homicide investigators. These guys lived that twilight reality 24/7 while I was merely a tourist. I am still haunted by things I encountered in that world where work begins after someones violent death. Pizzolatto, McConaughey and Harrelson weave a pattern of that life in an exotic drama. Once you see McConaughey's work, it will sear an impression upon you.  Powerful stuff on the screen.

SAN SIMEON COVE
Evidence of a diverse yield from the Pacific was splayed around San Simeon Cove on a recent afternoon stroll.
Wave action reveals pilings from an old pier, perhaps the original that William Randolph Hearst constructed to unload artifacts and remains of European villas, churches and objects of art for his own castle up the mountain.
Pieces of whale vertebra are being unearthed by the sea.

And only barely more lively are elephant seals, who have wandered far from the colony to find peaceful venues for a snooze.

While this more junior member chose a spot on the parking lot.

THE PIER and THE BRUSH

THE BRUSH
Meditations on living with a finite resource
The bath brush is getting "more playing time," as they say in the game.
Serious attempts at water conservation have given me the opportunity to notice how the time with the shower off increases, proportionately, the time when the brush gets to work.  No doubt this is something like the principle of Inverse Void Action-the emptiness of something, in this case water, is filled with the presence of something else, the use of the brush.
The soak, lather and scrub practice, done between quick douses from the shower, is a pleasant way to conserve by shortening showers. And as you might expect, it also enhances the pleasure of the water spray when it is on.
THE PIER

The Pier and cove at San Simeon are a jewel of the Central Coast. Human intrusion is at a minimum.

WOW-THE WEEKENDER

AS SUMMER ROUNDS THE BEND
I have no explanation for this.  This summer we've been growing tomatoes with noses.  Amusing, yes, but also delicious.  As you might imagine they've prompted plenty of comment, none of which I will repeat here.
A MIND BOGGLING REPORT
Thanks to my friend and tennis mate, Janos for bringing this extraordinary report to our attention. This offers huge potential for all us but in the shorter run a reason for hope for those with particular disabilities.  Mind over matter and mechanics to be sure.

and finally,
A TRIP TO THE SHORE
here's a couple of minutes captured just a couple of miles from here
Enjoy this long weekend.  See you down the trail.

THE EXOTICS ARE BACK AND KITES OVER THE PACIFIC

 EXOTICS IN BLOOM
The annual succulent show in San Luis Obispo again provides plenty at which to marvel.

My George Lucas inspired imagination sees a Jabba the Hutt type creature in repose, below. That would be Jabba with a punk  hair cut.

This specie, and its cousins, are especially interesting in that they resemble something barely alive.

KITES OVER THE PACIFIC
Several miles north of Cambria on the Pacific Coast highway, the sky is frequently filled.
For several years I've watched these extraordinary athletes and remain fascinated by this combination of surfing and sailing.

The launching beach is a wide expanse of sand.
Below, the view behind the beach.

HIDDEN BEACHES & TRUTH IN THE BENGHAZI AND IRS SIDESHOWS

TRUTHS IN SWIRLING TEMPESTS
Clouds hang over an already failed legislative branch of US government and they threaten further distraction.
The IRS targeting of political and anti Obama groups should be investigated and responsible parties should be fired or prosecuted. The federal tax man must be a neutral, even if not an always popular, bean counter and collector.
While tax law is  the art of lawyers who influence the increasingly stupid members of congress to write legislation that favors those with money to hide, the IRS still should not target people because of politics. That is fascist, totalitarian, Stalinist thuggery and there should be no place for it in a Democratic Republic.
There should also be an inquiry into the Benghazi fiasco if for no other reasons than to shut up the political opportunists and more importantly figure how and why the vast intelligence and national security apparatus failed Ambassador Chris Stevens and the three other Americans who died in service to the US.
Mistakes, and miscommunication occurred and all members of the intelligence community, defense and national security apparatus need to be held accountable.
The problem of further study though is that it will only serve to excite the yapping Republican political operatives who see this as a way to damage Hillary Clinton's political chances in 2016 and cause defending Democrats to drag their feet.  Mrs. Clinton already said she takes responsibility for the disaster, though an investigative panel found the mistakes were made below her level.
To date there is no evidence of a cover up, as the political wind bags allege, but there is plenty of evidence of confusion.  CIA, NSC, State Department, DOD, the White House and others were horribly inefficient, poorly coordinated, and all probably have to share in the ignominy of the Benghazi incident and the follow-up reporting and communication. Was there any ass covering?  Well if history is any indication, there was probably a significant amount, but covering your butt is different than a cover up.
Those who compare this to Watergate should have their tongues locked. Watergate was a political dirty tricks operation, part of a sabotage of the electoral process, that involved a failed burglary, and then blossomed to where pay-offs were shuttled, lies were told, Justice Department people were fired, and it was all run out of the White House. That was a cover up! Benghazi was a screw up.
Failed management, failed security, failed reaction, failed mission are all worthy of inquiry, but as noted, going down this road will no doubt create another side show in the embarrassing and deplorable environment that has become the US Congress. Both parties have much to be ashamed of, but don't you get a sense these fools are beyond embarrassment?
So now we have another circus or two to further delay
responsible action on fixing our national economic security, improving education, caring for a decaying infrastructure, getting out of idiot wars, strategizing for a clean energy future, truly regulating the untouched criminal class of investment bankers and financiers, and preventing what appears to be the entrenchment of a new gilded age.  Gilded ages never end well.
The world, and our enemies have changed, but the fools on the hill continue to play the cheapest and pettiest of games, bought and sold by money politics instead of national interest. Our interests in Benghazi and the IRS flap should simply be the truth, not political gain.
Excuse me, I think I'll tune out and take a walk.

HOW DO YOU WANT TO LIVE & IS THAT WHAT I THINK IT IS?

EARTH NEWS
A service of this blog is the link, just to the right, to the Scientific American blog, an incredible source of real news and valued information.  Mainstream and social media are buzzing today with "news" that last year was the hottest on record.  Scientific American has been on, into and all over the facts for several months.  They posted earlier.  Do yourself a favor and keep an eye on their site.
Now what are we going to do about the climate and the implications of continued change?
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Have you followed the proposed changes at one of this planet's treasures, Yosemite National Park?
To help protect the wild nature of the Merced River and environs, the park plans to eliminate a 1920's skating rink, bike and river raft rental, while rerouting some roads, using more shuttle buses and constructing a pedestrian underpass to connect the lodge with the falls.
The plan has been years in developing.  Public comment is accepted until mid April.
Visiting Yosemite, and nearby Sequoia National Park is a profound experience.
HEARST GRAZING
A drive on the scenic Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1)
is even more amusing when the Hearst zebra are grazing.
Spotting zebra in a heard of cattle prompts tourists to brake suddenly.  Did I really see that?  Is that what I think it is?
The Hearst Castle, built by Julia Morgan for William Randolph Hearst sits atop a mountain on the 80 thousand acre San Simeon-Piedras Blancas ranch.  It's an impressive stretch of California central coast.

The zebra are a vestige of the old man's penchant for wild animals.  Thru the years, the heard has grown and often grazes along side the Hearst grass fed beef.
Hearst zebras were the center of a shooting incident almost two years.

A commercial talks about California cows being contented.  Must be true for California zebras too, don't you think?  Fewer predators than Africa and a great ocean view.

VOCALIZING

MEN AND THEIR OATHS
Photo Courtesy of Coast Guard, California Highway Patrol and the Associated Press
It sounds as though the 77 year old pilot and his son were pretty cool as they waited two hours to be pulled from the sinking pontoon plane.
The AP reports the son says his dad landed it well, in the Pacific, a mile off shore of San Simeon, north of Cambria.
They were on their way for an annual Alaskan fishing trip when the engine died.  Their locator beacon worked and in a couple of hours the Coast Guard chopper was at work pulling them up, just as the plane was beginning to sink.
What do you think a dad and son would have to say to each other as they bobbed amongst elephant seals, great white sharks and took the waves in a dead plane? Few conversations get that kind of setting.
COACHING YOURSELF IN OUTBURSTS
AND OTHER OATHS
It was amusing to hear what came from other tennis courts as our group took a break between sets.  Guys were being vocal with them self, berating their own play or lack of control.  Since the courts are on a school campus there is a club policy against profanity. In that context I heard a few God    Bless Americas! being hurled in that voice that seems as if it struggles with control.  Mostly, guys talking to themselves, like a coach; keep your eye on the ball (insert name), stroke it, don't poke it (insert name), oh!, where were you going with that shot (insert name)?
In a few minutes I was back on the court, and probably
fully engaged in that "hybrid coaching" well.
We love our games don't we?

TWO LEVELS OF TROUBLE

NUDE SWIM-NO BIG DEAL
Republican Kevin Yoder, congressman from Kansas, apologized for taking a quick skinny dip into the Sea of Galilee while on a congressional trip last year.  That he apologized is an honorable gesture, but unnecessary.
A quick and spontaneous jump into the sea, especially in a hot climate is perfectly fine.  And if you are with friends or family and you dip naturale d'Au, why should anyone care?
A few moralistic bloggers have snorted as to how disgusting that is for an American congressman.  Really?  Why would that be?  We came into this world naked.  I understand why some of us may be embarrassed about how our bodies have turned out, but this was not naked beach volleyball.  It was a dip into the ocean and the nudity was brief, long enough to immerse.  I'd worry more about those who entered the sea, in clothing.  And for those snooty and condescending bloggers, one of whom I heard interviewed on NPR, I suggest you read of some of Benjamin Franklin's behavior, when serving as a US Representative in France. I don't think his "cavorting" affected his impact on human history.
A dip into the sea with friends is no problem, no big deal, and none of your business.  Leave the guy alone on this.  Attack his politics and beliefs if you like, but not a skinny dip.
NOW, THIS CONGRESSMAN IS AN IDIOT
Todd Akin of Missouri should be an embarrassment to
to all Republicans, in fact to all males anywhere on the
political spectrum.  There is no defense for his comments on rape.  His party should run him out of sight. If he's not an idiot, he's just plain stupid.
