BIG SUR, AGAIN
AFTER 36 YEARS
In March of 76 Lana and I joined Barb and Dave for a Bicentennial drive across America. We loaded their VW Van, bid a farewell to our daughter who was being doted over by grandmothers and aunts and headed west.
Barb uncovered my daily journal from that trip and this week we have recounted memories. A highlight of that epic journey was a camping trip to Big Sur's Lime Kiln. This was long before it was a state park. We had been there previously and had been captured by it. In March of 76, Barb and Dave made their first and last visit, until this week.
What a great joy it was to be there again with Barb and Dave. We had much to celebrate, most notably Barb's victory over ovarian cancer.
Frequent readers of this blog will recall several postings from Big Sur and especially Lime Kilns. It is one of our favorite places on the planet.
There is a primeval peace and a natural tranquility which breathes from the rushing stream and sun light filtered through towering redwoods.
I've posted about the fire which burned through the forest
and the natural recovery which occurred, as it has for as long as time.
Have a great weekend. Tell good friends you love them.
See you down the trail.
YOU do get around. And you have always been "earthy: Concerned with Enviornment".
ReplyDeleteAS YOU Suggest: This weekend I am busy telling friends HowMuch I care, for them.
Thanx for the great photos. Are you always on the road? Happy last day of Summer~! -w-
Our last trip to Limekiln, we had campsite number one, 150 yards from the beach. Like you guys, it is one of favorite places on earth. While there,we met 3 young couples from the Bay Area, they played guitars, drank wine and best of all they fished from kayaks and shared!
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of state and national parks---America's best ideas according to Ken Burns, and I agree. It's so wonderful that these pristine landscapes, safe from developers, patiently wait for your return.

ReplyDeleteA very good friend who died in 1977 introduced me to the Lime Kilns in 1969...soon after I purchased my 68 VW Camper. Over the years, quite a few trips were made there from LA's South Bay.
ReplyDeleteOne of those Lime Kiln weekends included a College buddy's "welcome home" from Vietnam celebration.
For many reasons, your photos and words bring smiling tears.
Love you all very much.
Great to hear from you Terry.
DeleteWe should make plans for another reunion trip, don't you think. Would love to see you guys out here.
