(We have the medium sized bin from Waste management) The farm my dad grew up on was 100% off the grid. My gramps bought a Wincharger system in the 20's, they collected rainwater, etc. When REA became a reality then went on the grid. I remember my grand mother saying the only upside was the freezer, the vacuum cleaner and the coal stoker. Been reading The World Without Us by Alan Reisman recently after having it in my library for some time. It clearly reveals what we've done, and whether nature could restore when/if humans are gone. Fascinating, quite scientific AND marvelous writing. Another book I've only read a couple chapters of (online) is Beyond Hope, also quite scientific, and depressing. I will say this living in Cambria, a green and optimistic spot on the planet. If we can't do sustainability HERE, where can we? Few can "buy in" here but once "bought," it behooves us to live according to values that many recognized were deadend/destructive in leaving big cities--such as unbounded growth, car proliferation, and insenstivity to wildlife. FYI, and as you (Tom) may remember, I wrote a small booklet on what people can do to impact climate change (and what they normally CAN'T!). If anyone out there wants to help me get it online or published, contact me at billseavey@gmail.com.
