As far as the first book goes, your assessment about the story-line and outcome is "spot on." Also, it coincides with my darker-than-your view of mankind. But I will also read (and see) the later books in the series, which must (?) have more of an upward, hopeful arc. How does one maintain an optimistic view of the future when we are barraged constantly by disaster after disaster, served up to us as entertainment.
